Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: from FROG Crate to Log Cabin

At Reflex Marine we are always looking at ways to reduce our environmental impact and are encouraged to see others in the industry doing the same.

We were inspired by an initiative that has been introduced by our Canadian client, Seadrill Onshore, based in St Johns, Newfoundland. The environmental initiative encourages employees to think about ways to reduce their environmental impact, both inside and outside of the workplace.

At the core of Seadrill’s initiative is the concept of the 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The challenge given to employees involves submitting a photograph demonstrating all 3 R’s in action. All photographs are then displayed in the Seadrill office to share examples of how personnel are reducing their environmental impact. The person who submits the photograph deemed to best demonstrate the use of the 3 R’s is awarded a prize.

Winner of the June competition was Seadrill’s QHSE Advisor, Glen Carroll, who creatively reused a FROG shipping crate to build a log cabin in the forest (pictured below). The crate had been used to transport Seadrill’s most recent FROG purchase.

Seadrill currently own three FROG-6 units which are located on platforms off the east coast of Canada. The FROG’s provide Seadrill with a safe method of transferring personnel. This is of particular importance in the summer months when fog results in helicopters being grounded due to poor visibility.

All of the components used for the construction of the log cabin are reclaimed materials. The foundations and structure of the log cabin are made from the wooden shipping container (pictured below). The FROG sticker is proudly displayed on the outer wall of the cabin and was sent to Glen by Reflex Marine to provide a fitting final touch.

CRATE

Reflex Marine is currently conducting an environmental audit of our shipping practices and is in the process of reviewing the most environmentally friendly materials available for product packing. We have recently trialled the use of reinforced cardboard as an alternative to wood for the packing of replacement parts. By using reinforced cardboard our clients can more easily and cost effectively recycle the shipping materials.

Our new product range, the FROG-XT (pictured below), has been designed to fit in a standard shipping container so does not require full wooden crating, reducing the environmental footprint of the product.
